How to check slot RTP: find the real figure in a minute

Each online slot mentions its RTP in its own rules. The casino's game page may also display a figure, but the rules screen that is part of the game you are playing is the one that matters.

Finding it takes two or three taps, once you become familiar with where each studio places it. Below is where to look for the big studios, the exact line to look for, and how to tell whether the casino runs the top version.

How to check slot RTP in any online slot

Once you have the game open (either in demo mode or for real money), find the button to display the rules (normally an 'i', '?' or a 3 line menu).

The rules screen is normally several pages or one long scroll. Towards the end of the rules is a line that begins with "The theoretical" and states the RTP as a percentage.

In Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play) the 'i' button is to the left of the credit display. The RTP is on page 4 of the rules.

That figure is the RTP for this casino. The RTP finder shows the top version of the same game, for comparison.

Where each studio puts the slot RTP

Each studio has its own buttons and wording. The line is the same in all casinos that run the game; only the figure changes with the version.

Hacksaw GamingMenu (three lines), INFO, below the paytableThe theoretical payout (RTP) for this game is 96.38%.

The same slot RTP line at two casinos

Hacksaw's line stays the same at all casinos. The numbers vary. At Winna, Wanted Dead or a Wild says 96.38%. At Kings Game, the same line says 92.33%.

Checking slot RTP in Quickspin games

Quickspin buries their rules one level deeper. Three round buttons sit above the menu. The i opens the pay table, the ? opens the rules, and the clock opens your game history.

The RTP is in the rules, in the section "About the game". Quickspin uses a comma to represent the decimal point, so 97,34% is 97.34%.

That's important, because Big Bad Wolf runs at 97.34% or 90.01%, and the two look identical until you check the rules. Quickspin versions at five casinos: Quickspin casinos.

What the slot RTP figure tells you

A number on its own is pretty vague. Set it against the versions the studio puts out for the same game. For Wanted Dead or a Wild, casinos choose one of four, all separate builds.

And why casinos can do that: can casinos change RTP?

Whether your number is any good: what is a good RTP for slots?

  1. 96.38%

Wanted Dead or a Wild's best version. It's at six of the ten casinos we review.

  2. 94.55%

The second, about 1.8 points lower. TonyBet, Rakebit and Glorion run it.

  3. 92.33%

The third, 4 points lower. It's at Kings Game.

  4. 88.42%

The lowest version Hacksaw publishes. None of the 10 run it.

Check slot RTP in the game, not the casino's label

Some casinos print an RTP figure next to the game. It can be right, rounded, or wrong.

Big Bad Wolf: what 7Bit says against what the game says

The figures under the game matched the rules screens for all four slots checked at Winna. Kings Game prints 92% for Wanted Dead or a Wild, a rounded 92.33%.

7Bit's text reads 97.34% for Big Bad Wolf, and the game's help reads 90.01%. The rules screen comes with the game build, the label is text the casino writes.

Check slot RTP again before playing for real

A demo shows the version the casino loads for free play. It is often the real money version as well, but not always: HellSpin, 7Bit, BetLabel and Rakebit show Gates of Olympus at 96.50% in free play and 94.50% for real money.

So read the figure once more after you log in. It takes ten seconds and settles the question.

Watch for the same game listed twice. TonyBet's lobby has two Big Bad Wolf tiles with the same name and picture: one at 97.34%, the other at 90.01%.

More on free play: do demo slots have the same RTP?

  1. Check in the demo

Read the RTP line in free play, before you sign up.

  2. Check after logging in

Open the same tile for real money and read the line again.

  3. Note the tile

If the casino lists the game twice, check both and play the higher one.

When you cannot check the slot RTP

Sometimes the figure is out of reach. Per the UK Gambling Commission, casinos operating in the UK must provide RTP information where it is easy to find before you play, but the casinos we review hold other licences and that rule doesn't apply to them.

Some casinos block the demo. For example, Pragmatic Play games are blocked in the demo at TonyBet when you are logged out, and you have to sign up before you can see the version.

If the studio doesn't release a lower version, the figure in the rules is the one to trust. Search the game in the RTP finder to see what the studio lists.
