Hot and cold slots 2026: what a hot streak really means

A 'hot' slot is one that has been paying out a lot, and a 'cold' slot is one that hasn't been paying out much. Some casinos even post 'hot' and 'cold' lists. The question is if any of this is helpful in figuring out what a slot will do on the next spin.

It is not. Each spin of an online slot is independent of the last, and recent results wander far from the RTP by pure chance. What doesn't change is the version of the game that the casino operates.

Are hot and cold slots real?

Slots definitely go on hot and cold streaks. Over a short period of time (a couple hundred or thousand spins), a slot can greatly out-perform or under-perform its RTP.

It is not true that a hot slot will keep paying. Likewise, a cold slot is not bound to catch up.

The UK Gambling Commission states that for random games, the odds of a win are always the same. In the case of slots, the results of previous spins have no bearing on what will happen in the next spin.

Why recent results stray so far: theoretical vs actual RTP.

The odds of achieving a win in the current game remain constant and are not affected by wins or losses in previous games.

Hot and cold slots lists at casinos

Recent results are used by some casinos as an additional feature. Genting Casino's Hot or Cold page, for example, shows a ranking of different slots based on recent payout rates, and refreshes every 5 minutes. It also shows how many rounds have been played.

Hot slots have flames, cold slots have snow. The page itself states that the feature "does not foretell success or positive outcomes".

That disclaimer is the truthful part. A list like this indicates where luck has fallen for all players in the last few minutes or hours.

What a hot or cold slot reading really measures

A hot list, as it's called, shows the actual return to player (RTP) for a given short period of time. The regulator's method shows how far that can differ from the true RTP with nothing wrong at all.

A slot with a 96% return and moderate volatility typically lands between about 61% and 131% over 1,000 spins. A slot shown "on fire" at 130% RTP is in that range. The same is true of a slot shown "on ice" at 62% RTP.

Only after hundreds of thousands of rounds does the range close to a few points. No casino list runs on that kind of play per game in five minutes.

Normal range of actual RTP on a 96% slot

  • 1,000 rounds61.3% to 130.7%
  • 10,000 rounds85% to 107%
  • 100,000 rounds92.5% to 99.5%
  • 1,000,000 rounds94.9% to 97.1%

Approximately 95% of results occur within each bar. Standard deviation 5.6, which is given in the example provided by the UK Gambling Commission. The dark line represents 96% RTP.

Cold streaks are built into every slot

Long runs without a win appear to be good evidence that a slot has "gone cold." They are expected and normal.

Starburst pays out on 23% of spins. However, there is a 71% chance that over 1,000 spins there will be 20 or more consecutive spins with no wins at all.

Over 500 spins, there is a near certainty that there will be 10 or more consecutive spins with no wins at all. None of this means the slot has "gone cold."

When a hot and cold slot could be real

One machine type where the past does matter is banned online in regulated markets.

How does version choice work? See can casinos change RTP?

A way to check single results in casino-run games: provably fair explained.

  1. Random games

All games have the same odds regardless of what came before. Online slots from regulated studios work this way.

  2. Compensated machines

They change the odds of the next outcome depending on earlier results, to steer towards a target RTP. Some land-based machines work this way.

  3. The online rule

The UK Gambling Commission's remote standards: "Adaptive behaviour (that is, a compensated game) is not permitted."

  4. What casinos can change

Not the odds of your next spin. Only which RTP version of the slot is being used.

The difference that lasts longer than hot and cold

Luck fades over enough spins. The RTP version does not. Le Bandit runs at 96.34% at some casinos and 92.17% at others, and that gap is there on every spin.

So, to get a slot that is "hot" for good, the only real way is playing at a casino that runs the highest RTP version of the game. Casinos that run the top versions: best payout online casinos.

Why one slot has several versions: slot RTP versions.

Le Bandit: average kept on €1,000 of spins

  • 96.34% version€36.60
  • 94.23% version€57.70
  • 92.17% version€78.30
  • 88.36% version€116.40

Averages over many spins. The gap between versions stays; hot and cold spells even out.

Hot and cold slots FAQ

Are hot and cold slots real?

Hot and cold spells happen, because results swing widely over short stretches. They do not predict the next spin: each spin is independent of the others and has the same odds.

Is a cold slot due to pay out?

No. Online slots do not catch up. A long losing streak is to be expected. On a slot with a 23% hit frequency, a run of 20 spins with no win is more likely than not over 1,000 spins.

What do casino hot and cold lists show?

Recent payout rates across all players. Genting Casino's own page says its feature does not predict the future.

How long does a slot stay hot?

There is nothing to stay. A slot that paid 130% over the last 1,000 spins is to be expected from a 96% game.

Can a casino make a slot hot or cold?

It can choose a lower RTP version, which is cold for good. A game that adjusts to recent results is not allowed to be run online within the UK.

How do I find a slot that pays more over time?

Pick the top RTP version and play it where the casino runs it. Check the RTP in the game's rules.
