Hit frequency in slots 2026: how often a spin pays at all

Hit frequency tells us the rate at which a slot pays out. A slot with a hit frequency of 25% will pay out on average every fourth spin.

It appears to be the most important stat, when in reality it is unrelated to RTP, volatility and the top prize in the studios' own figures for 985 slots.

What hit frequency in slots means

It is important to note that hit frequency counts all wins regardless of the amount won. It does not say how much those wins pay.

Hit frequency is published in two different ways. NetEnt, Red Tiger and Nolimit City publish hit frequency as a percentage. BGaming, on the other hand, publishes it as a "hit rate" of one win in so many spins.

Both say the same thing. 25% is one win in 4 spins; one win in 2.9 spins is 34%.

Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw and Quickspin do not include the stat on their game pages.

Same RTP, different hit frequency

Both Starburst and Mental pay back 96.08%. Everything else about the two games is different.

Starburst hits 23% of spins, Mental 34.19%

Mental pays out more frequently than Starburst, but the wins are a lot wilder. The top prize on Mental is 66,666 times the bet as compared to Starburst, which is 800 times the bet. Nolimit City rates Mental's volatility as "insane".

Just because Mental's hit frequency is higher doesn't make its swings any gentler. It means many more small wins, paid for by a few enormous ones that most players never see: the studio puts the top prize at 1 in 18 million spins.

For reasons why RTP and volatility are separate things, see RTP vs volatility.

Hit frequency in 985 slots

Four studios post hit frequencies for their games. The combined total for those games is 985 entries in our RTP finder.

Compared to the other figures for the same games, hit frequency tells you very little. Slots that don't pay often and those that pay often have the same typical RTP (about 96.1%).

The top prize also doesn't correlate to it. Slots in every hit frequency band have a typical max win between 3,000x and 5,300x.

Max win slots, in detail.

  1. Typical slot

At 25.4% hit frequency, meaning about one win for every four spins.

  2. Most slots

80% of the 985 are between 15% and 38.6% hit frequency.

  3. Rare winners

97 of the 985 have a hit frequency of less than 15%.

  4. Frequent winners

80 of the 985 have a hit frequency of more than 40%.

Hit frequency in slots by studio

Each studio focuses on about one win for every four spins. The range in each studio is far greater than the difference between the studios.

Red Tiger has games that range from under 1% to over 60% hit frequency, so a studio's name reveals little about a game. Read the figure that's on the game's own page.

Hit frequency and the size of each win

Divide the RTP by the hit frequency to find the average win per hit. Starburst pays back 96.08% and has a hit frequency of 23%, so its average hit is about 4.2 times the bet.

Mental has the same RTP as Starburst, but has a hit frequency of 34.19%. So its average hit is about 2.8 times the bet. That average includes the infrequent large wins, so most of Mental's hits are small.

The lesson: a slot that hits often gives smaller wins on average. The money has to come from somewhere, and the RTP sets that limit.

How to use hit frequency when picking slots

Hit frequency is a sort of comfort number. A high one means fewer long runs without a win and gives the feeling of a more steady game. It does not help you lose less. That is the job of the RTP, and it depends on the version the casino runs.

Which version a casino runs: how to check slot RTP.

Why a long run without a win is not a cold slot: hot and cold slots.

  1. Pick by RTP first

Pick a game whose top version pays back the best, at a casino that runs it.

  2. Then by volatility

Lower or medium, if your budget is small.

  3. Use hit frequency last

Higher for steadier sessions; the payback stays the same.

Hit frequency in slots FAQ

What is hit frequency in slots?

The percentage of spins that yield a win. A 25% hit frequency means that, on average, one win occurs every four spins.

What is a good hit frequency for a slot?

The typical figure across 985 slots is 25.4%. Above that, sessions feel steadier, but the slot doesn't pay back more.

No. Both Starburst and Mental pay back 96.08% and have hit frequencies of 23% and 34.19%, respectively.

Is hit frequency the same as volatility?
